CENTENARY WALL/PATHWAY

SCHOOL HISTORY

Taken from TIN DOG CREEK – The Dowerin Story 1897 – 1997 by Stan Gervas

The Agricultural Hall was used as a School from 1908 but unhappily a rare tornado swept through the town in 1909 and took most of the hall with it. The hall was being used as a school at the time and twelve children were attending. They were away at lunch mercifully.

The school was moved to Angel’s Hall after the tornado and stayed there for a while until Mrs Avery wrote a spirited letter to the Department of Education about Mr Angel:

Sir I beg to state, as you are no doubt already aware, that Mr Angel is a builder and undertaker…. The body was moved at ten o’clock on Monday night and placed in a room separated only by a thin partition from the room where the school is held. The body was kept there all day Tuesday and also on Wednesday. Quite enough to give fever to all in school. I have used plenty of disinfectant and the smell is still bad. All the children complain of feeling sick. Mr Angel went away on Tuesday by train, consequently the room has not been disinfected. The parents are complaining about having to send their children to such a place and say that unless something is done about the matter, they will not send their children to school.

Relief was at hand – eventually. Mr D Smallhorn was awarded a contract to build a new 22’ x 18’ timber-framed school on the site previously reserved. On May 6th the work was completed and the children moved in. The building cost £233.00. Nineteen children now attended the distinctive school which had been built on stilts very much in the Queensland tradition – for coolness during the long wheatbelt summer.
